Garibaldi June 16th, 2026

I went bottom fishing with Mike on his boat and we found some very willing biters. The above photo is of 2 black sea bass which hit my homemade/custom shrimp fly jigs (see photo below - will be available soon in the shop) and a cabezon, which hit a 5 oz flutter jig. The cabezon was released. This was all on one drop, the first drop onto a small new reef I discovered by accident.

The popular spots such as the Dinner Reef, Cannon Beach, Three Arches, Manzanita, Pacific City certainly produce, but it’s fun when you discover new spots, especially those which are within four miles of the jetty tips. The drift can be very short, a couple hundred feet or less, but can be very very productive.

I do not see that the coho have arrived in earnest yet, but I’m ready to change gears to salmon fishing as soon as they do. The crabbing has been steadily improving, but there are still a lot of females to sort through to get the male keepers.

I’ll be heading back down on Wednesday for the July 4th weekend. It looks like the weather should be good for at least a few days starting Thursday. The only problem could be the timing of the tides, so we may have to wait for the bar to be unrestricted.
